Sleeping With Snakes

The cats were crouched in stalking position, both focused on a thing and when she finally was able to remove them from on top of it, fully expecting that it would be something else, there was a black and yellow, very young and coiled Kingsnake — one of the friendly kind of snakes — the kind that eat rattlers and mice. Once the cats were pushed away, it slithered off toward the bed. It wouldn’t be much longer, if she didn’t take things in hand, before the most aggressive cat, the girl and the smallest, would have it in her mouth and up on the bed and God only knows how many kinds of snakes there are to sleep with, and even though this one was likely friendly and out to do no harm, sleeping with snakes was definitely not on her bucket list — not this kind or the other.
